Zindani, Zechariah
Son of Shoshana and Shalom, was born in 1925 in the city of Tidan, Yemen. When he was three years old, he was rescued from his father and immigrated to Israel with his mother and sister on September 15, 1935. He was a quiet, humble boy. He was interested in studies and was a sports fan. At first he sat in the streets and later in Netanya and supported his widowed mother in diamond polishing work. His ambition was to study and become an engineer. He also worked to improve the situation of the youth in the Yemenite neighborhood of Neve Shalom. During British rule he was arrested as a suspect in actions against them and was imprisoned for eight months in Latrun. As soon as he was released from detention, he joined the ranks of the Haganah and was active in it. Zechariah joined the army on April 1, 1948, in the Golani Brigade and served as a squad commander. He participated in various battles in the Lower Galilee, and even though he was wounded twice, he continued to fulfill his duties. Shortly before his death he went down with the brigade to the Negev and participated in Operation Assaf to eliminate the Egyptian threat to advance to Be’er Sheva. On December 7, 1948, during an Egyptian bombardment in the Sheik-Nuran area, he was hit by a shrapnel and fell, and was buried on the border. ) Was put to rest in the military cemetery in Netanya.
