Zigerman, Nachum (Nachumczyk)
Son of Rivka and Zvi, was born on Augest 3, 1928 in Tel Aviv. From his youth he was a member of the Young Maccabee and was active in rowing and swimming. He also joined the Haganah. At the end of 1946, Nachum joined the Palmach as part of the “Maccabee Hatzair” training program in Givat Haim and was sent to the Negev. He fulfilled his duties with convoy escorts from the Negev to the north of the country, and participated in the battles of the Negev in the Palmach’s Second Battalion (which was subsequently attached to the Yiftah Brigade). He was among those who were fighting a heavy battle against the Egyptians in Kfar Darom. There he also received the news of the declaration of the state and managed to bless it in his last letter to his parents, written a day before his fall: “With God’s help and with the help of the people, we live in a Jewish state … I am sure of our victory.” Nachum fell in the “Mekorot” camp on the 10th of Iyar, May 19, 1948, during a long and deadly bombardment of Nir Am and surroundings. He was buried in Nir Am,”The Young Maccabee” established in his memory the “Nachum Swimming Pool”. On Kislev 25, 5712 (December 4, 1950) he was laid to rest at the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
