Ziff, Zvi

The eldest son of Chasia and Chaim, was born in 1912 in the city of Braslav, Vilna district, Poland. Until the age of 16 he studied at Yeshiva. Because of the family’s precarious situation, he was forced to stop his studies and go to work to support his parents. He was not satisfied with his soul at work alone and became active in the Hehalutz branch in his most dormant town, and did much for the national foundations. Zvi served for two years in the Polish army, and in the outbreak of World War II in 1939 he fought in his ranks. Zvi was taken captive by the Russians, and he was taken from camp to camp and suffered from hunger and cold. When the Polish army was organized in Russia, he left with him and arrived in Palestine in 1944. When he arrived in Israel, he worked for one year at Kibbutz Tel Yosef. He worked well in his work, but because of his loneliness, he left the farm and worked as a dairy farmer in Ramat Gan and joined the Hagana. Even though he was drafted, volunteered, and served in the “Kiryati” brigade on the basis of his vital work as a dairy farmer in an exempt agriculture. He took part in guarding and protecting the defense lines in Tel Aviv, occupying Tel Litvinsky, Hiriya and more. He said: “If I, a trained soldier, I will not go – who will go?” He was a lively soldier, quick and energetic, and he fulfilled all his duties with faith and devotion. During the “Danny” operation, our forces also took control of the Modi’in area, and when the second truce came into force, the area was occupied by forces in the area, one of them from the 219. The area was calm, and the force was held by the Kiryat Brigade, and on September 23, 1948, Legionnaires were attacked and forced to retreat in light of the enemy’s superiority, and many were injured in the harsh retreat, and the next day, our forces attacked and conquered the outpost, which fell on the 24th of Elul 5708 (24.9.1948) and was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery Military presence in Nahalat Yitzhak.
