Zandman, Dov


Son of Chaya and Yehoshua, was born in 1906 in the town of Dzivniski, near Vilna, Poland. On April 13, 1948, he was one of the leaders of the “Hadassah” convoy to Mount Scopus, and the road to Mount Scopus was transferred to the Arab Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and when the war broke out, The convoy was attacked by an Arab ambush in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and hundreds of Arabs set fire to it on the morning of April 13, 1948. Some of the vehicles managed to get out and return, But two buses, an ambulance and a escort vehicle were ambushed, and for many hours the convoy members fought and tried to prevent the Arabs from approaching the vehicles. They were unable to help the convoy, but British army forces intervened and did nothing to help, despite their requests, and in the afternoon the Arabs managed to set fire to two buses on their passengers. Only late in the evening did the British intervene and rescue the survivors from the trapped vehicles. Dov was brought to eternal rest in a mass grave in Sanhedria cemetery in Jerusalem. He left a wife, son and a daughter.
