Yair Engel

Yair Engel

Son of Yonit and Yosef (Juha) Yair was born on 14.1.1977 in Kibbutz Ramat Rachel. When he was born he was the younger brother of Yael and Yoav, and when he was seven, the twins Yifat and Yaara were born, and Yair became a “sandwich boy,” but only in theory, because in fact he was always the only child. When Yair was two years old, his family left for Holland. Yair visited a local kindergarten there, and despite the difficulties of language, he quickly connected with the kindergarten children. Yair loved animals and enjoyed visiting the zoo in Amsterdam. As he walked through gardens and parks, he liked to feed the squirrels who walked around freely, and in his house he raised a rabbit, cat and hamster. Yair began his studies at the Alon elementary school on Kibbutz Ma’aleh Hahamisha, and when he had to move to high school, he preferred to study at the Hebrew Gymnasium in Rehavia, Jerusalem, so that he could continue playing basketball on the Hapoel youth team in Jerusalem, ten. Michael Jordan was his favorite athlete, and the Chicago Bulls basketball team was his favorite team. He used to wear her outfit at every suitable opportunity and knew everything about her. When he began studying at the Rehavia Gymnasium, Yair joined the school’s basketball team. His coach in the same team notes that he was “one of the pillars of the school’s teams, both in light athletics and in basketball, and with his talent and enthusiasm, Yair succeeded in attracting the rest of his teammates to the teams. Yair liked less than usual, and had his own way of learning. For example, he decided at a young age that it was not necessary for him to make an effort to learn English: “After the army I will travel to the United States for a few months, where I will learn the language quickly and well. But when he realized that he had to take the matriculation exams, he made efforts and passed them with good grades. Yair liked the combination of kibbutz life and city life and knew how to find the beneficial and the positive in both life forms. He had good relations with his friends and friends from both the kibbutz and the city. In poems he wrote, he could express his feelings about love. I have always thought that love is only good, / and therefore I have chosen you to love. / I have heard a lot about love in life, but never, And only now, when I began to love you, / and I hoped it would be so useful, / I discover how much love is degrading. ” This song and other songs written by Yair were compiled in a booklet published after his death. In the 11th grade, Yair went with his classmates on a tour of Poland, and Yair wrote the song “Six Million Brothers.” The song was read at the central memorial ceremony in Auschwitz: “They look down on us, six million brothers. How can a person get up in the morning as a normal person, and add thousands, just like him, to bereaved children? And how can a person simply decide on the opinion of someone else? I will never understand this / / There can be so much murder and blood, And to think that everything went ‘all the way’ And here is another group of people, so good, so naive, / Being put to death inhumanly, between four walls, despite the shouting / And now, late, people, only piles left. We will try and think for a long, long time, we will never understand / how many animals are allowed, / turn six million people into six million names. And so his son was so safe – six million brothers. “When Yair reached the twelfth grade, he chose to do his military service in a unit whose level of difficulty is the highest. From this point to the decision to enlist in the naval commando unit, the road was short. Yair enlisted in August 1995 and served in the naval commando unit for his good and friendly character, and for his high motivation. During the harsh training, he did not hear any complaint, and at home he received the full support and encouragement. Everyone was proud of him. On the 24th of Kislev 5757 (December 4, 1996), Yair found his death during a diving training, with a rope tied to his friend, Sergeant Matan Polivoda. We will never know the real reasons for his death. Yair was brought to eternal rest at Kibbutz Ramat Rachel. Survived by his parents, three sisters and a brother. Yair fell in the line of duty and he is not yet twenty years old. After his death he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant. Yair’s family collected what was said about him after his death and published them in a modest booklet. This was said or written by his family, his friends in civilian life and the army, and by his teachers and commanders. After his death, his family, together with a group of friends and friends, established a fund to commemorate his name. One of the foundation’s activities was the establishment of Mitzpeh Yair in the Luria Park, on Kibbutz Ramat Rahel. The observatory was built alongside the excavations of the palace of one of the kings of Israel during the First Temple period. Next to it are the communication channels and the defensive posts that served as a shield for Jerusalem in the years preceding the Six-Day War. From the observatory one can observe one of the fascinating landscapes of the city of Jerusalem. On the thirtieth day of Yair’s death, Yossi Debra wrote a poem in his memory: “A boy was in the mountains / and he is strong and strong like nature, and he is like the people of the mountains / His roots are deep in the rock / His head is in the clouds. On the sea and its blue spaces … / A man who wishes, hope and love / and the sea, the sea is cruel … / A boy grew up in the mountains / and with him was also evil. The sea is cruel. / .. A boy was buried in the mountains, / The dream was suddenly cut off. / / Cry bitter clouds, / And you also The people The sea lost / The strength of the forces in which a man fights / / The smile is lost and the name of the heart is lost / But you, Dear Boy, We shall remember forever! / A boy was in the mountains, / A boy grew up in the mountains, / A boy was buried in the mountains. ” Rafi Debra composed the lyrics of the song, which was produced on the tape, performed by the “Hora Jerusalem” group.
