Weiss, Joseph


Joseph, Ben Paula, and Zechariah was born in 1950 in Romania and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1964. He began his studies at an elementary school in his hometown and after his family arrived in Israel and settled in Kfar Sava, Yosef was drafted into the IDF in early February 1969 and assigned to the Golani Infantry Brigade, where he completed his training course for brigade commanders and served for two years in an infantry battalion. In 1971 he was transferred to the Armored Corps and was trained to serve as a driver and a tank crew. At the beginning of April 1972, Yossi was released from regular service and assigned to a reserve unit of the Armored Corps. As part of this unit he took part in training the establishment of a new armored brigade. After his discharge from the service he began working at the Discount Bank branch in Tel Aviv and also began studying in a computer programming course. He did not finish his studies and did not fulfill his desire to acquire a profession and establish his status. During the Yom Kippur War, his unit participated in the battles of containment and infiltration against the Egyptians in the Sinai. On the 24th of Tishrei 5734 (24.10.1973), his unit broke out at the head of an integrated armored and infantry force into the city of Suez. The city developed a fierce and cruel battle during which the unit suffered heavy losses. In this battle Yossi was injured and killed. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. Survived by a mother and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to corporal.
