Volcker, Dov (Benach)


Son of Miriam and Shmuel, Dov was born on 24.6.1924 in the city of Jasło, Poland. He was a member of the Hanoar Hatzioni movement and wanted to immigrate to Israel. During the Second World War, he lost his parents in the crematoria of the Belzec death camp in Poland. At the end of the war he was rescued from the Linz camp in Austria by members of the Jewish Brigade, and Dov immigrated to Israel in 1945. In Israel he worked as a car painter. In 1947, at the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was among the first recruits to the Haganah and served in the Carmeli Brigade. Dov was killed during the “Hiram” operation to liberate the Galilee on the 26th of Tishrei 5749 (29.10.1948) on the Tarshiha-Nahariya road on a mine. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Nahariya.
