Tsabari, Shalom

Ben Shim’a and Aharon. He was born in Adar, 1954. He immigrated to Israel with his family in 1961. The family settled in Gedera and Shalom began studying at the Ohel Shalom religious elementary school in the village. He was accepted to the IAF Technical School, but later moved to the Johanna Jabotinsky Youth Village and specialized in electronics. Shalom was drafted into the IDF in November 1972 and was assigned to serve in the Maintenance Corps as a driver, and was a good soldier who fulfilled his duties with dedication. He worked for Tadiran. He married Miri and the couple established their home in Gedera, where their children Roi and Neria-Avihai were born. Shalom was an exemplary family man who lavished great love on his wife and two children and cared for all their needs with great devotion. Shalom was called up for reserve duty in the Gaza Strip in December 1992 and fell on the 12th of December 1992 by terrorists who opened fire on the patrol soldiers in the Saja’iya neighborhood of Gaza City. He was laid to rest in the military section of the cemetery in Gedera. He put Raya, two sons, a mother and four brothers – Aharon, Solomon, David, and Yehiel. After his fall he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the battalion commander wrote about Shalom’s convenient nature, his intention to help his friends and his willingness to carry out tasks without complaining, qualities which, thanks to him and his great kindness, were loved by all the soldiers in the battalion. A similar letter was sent by the then Minister of Defense Yitzhak Rabin to the grieving family. His wife and sons commemorated his name with a Torah scroll cover donated by a synagogue.
