Sultan, Shmuel
Son of Rachel and Sa’adia, he was born on November 1, 1961 in Nahariya. As a member of a traditional family, he was educated in religious schools. He studied at the Maimonides Elementary School in Nahariya and after six years moved to the Tiferet Israel school in Haifa and from there to the high school yeshiva in Safed. In August 1979 he joined the IDF and served in the Ordnance Corps. As an orphan with small brothers and sisters, he could ease his service, but he insisted on fulfilling his duty in the regular army. He was proud of his service in the IDF and was sent to professional courses in the Ordnance Corps in August 1980. He was awarded the rank of corporal. He went into parachuting, and in February 1982 he was promoted to sergeant. On 18 Sivan, June 9, 1982, during a battle near the village of Hulda, his armored personnel carrier was hit and Shmuel fell. He was 21 when he died. He was laid to rest in the military section of the Ashkelon cemetery. Survived by his mother, three brothers and two sisters. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon wrote in a letter of condolence to his family: “Sergeant Shmuel Sultan gave his life for his homeland, he was a responsible soldier and carried out the tasks entrusted to him with utmost dedication and dedication. To return to the battalion, as always, he stood among the first.” The commander of his unit wrote to his family, “Your son remains as a symbol of diligence and help, few can do the same thing til the end and in a thorough way … The greatest honor to be given to the fallen is that their spirit is moving within us.”
