Spitzer, Dov

Son of Tzila and Shmuel, was born on 2.5.1913 in Berlin, the capital of Germany, and attended elementary and high school. From the age of 8 he was a member of the youth movement Ha – Maccabi ha – Tsa’ir. After two years of training in Denmark, he immigrated to Israel on 22.4.1934 and completed his training in the Maayan group, which joined Degania Aleph and stayed there for two years. He was a member of the Haganah since his arrival in Israel. When the riots broke out in 1936-1939 he was sent by the Degania group to serve as a patrolman in the Carmel Forest, and then served for several years at the Potash plant in Sodom. His wife and children sat in Jerusalem. From 1946 he worked as a clerk in the financial advisor’s office of the British Mandate government until the end of his work in early February 1948, following the reduction of the apparatus of the Mandatory government before his liquidation. He spent three difficult weeks in the service 22 hours a day, but he carried out his difficult task with understanding and devotion and sang from his peace of mind to his fellow soldiers. On the morning of Adar I 5708 (March 11, 1948), he came home for two hours and informed his wife that from now on he would be on a daily basis only and in the evenings he would be free: at 9 he returned to guard duty and at 11 o’clock he was killed in the big explosion that took place in the building. On April 24, 1952, he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
