Solovitch, Avraham (“Solo”)

Son of Alexander HaKohen and Yehudit. He was born on the 11th of Adar 5707 (March 3, 1947) in the city of Windsheim, Germany. He was not yet two years old and his parents had immigrated to Israel with him. His parents had gone through all the Nazi hell, and when they reached a safe haven they stuck a stake in the area. Avraham attended the Mizrachi elementary school, but his parents, who had the blood of pioneers, responded to the call “from the city to the village” and helped to establish the Yad Natan moshav. Avraham moved to the school in the rural center of Nehora until he completed his studies . Here too, as in the region, he discovered great talents and wonderful qualities as a student and as a member. He continued his high school studies at the Reali High School in Rishon Letzion and completed them at the Arab high school in Tel Aviv. He excelled in his studies and his subjects were mathematics, physics, chemistry, and science. He would say: “Literature is a dreamer, I am a practical person and therefore I love science.” He soon graduated from high school, but because of his youth he was not allowed to take the matriculation exams, but in due course he approached them and received very high grades. Avraham was serious in spirit, but that did not prevent him from being an athlete and participated in Hapoel in the region. He also liked to travel around the country. He swallowed a tendency to help all – and even if he did not know the person. A worn-out girl was hovering on his lips and with all his seriousness he had a joyous, cheerful joy. He loved all he knew. After his induction into the IDF in October 1964, he was an outstanding trainee, and after basic training he was sent to the infantry commander’s course and finished as an outstanding trainee. After a short period of time, he was recommended for a combat officers’ course, which he also successfully completed. As a combat subset he underwent a parachuting course that earned him a paratrooper’s wings. Avraham asked to command a combat platoon in Golani and in his request he was given a second lieutenant commander. When he left for civilian life, he planned to study at the university and in the meantime found a job at Ma’ariv’s print house as a non-professional worker. He was called up for reserve duty from time to time and during one of the tense days before the Six Day War he stood up and said, “I am going to the army!” He returned to his company and was assigned to command it. First he fought in the Great Triangle and then moved to the second front – the Syrian plateau. In the Battle of Tel Faher on the fifth day of the battles, he was the first to demonstrate his courage in commanding his company and serve as an example for his soldiers, and during the fighting he always ran first and did not allow anyone to pass it. The military cemetery in Afula and was later transferred to the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, after which he was promoted to the rank of captain.General of the Northern Command noted his service in praise of courage and spirit of volunteerism. He volunteered to serve in the unit even though he did not belong to the army, and on June 9, 1967, during the occupation of Tel Faher, he served as deputy company commander.
