Shiff, Shmuel-Ronen

Son of Aviva and Menachem, was born on 15.2.1961 in Ramat Gan. As a member of a traditional family, Ronen received a national religious education. He graduated with honors. Prior to his enlistment, he studied for one year at the “Kotel” yeshiva in Jerusalem, and during his induction he left medical imperfections in order not to detract from his medical profile. Ronen served in the Armored Corps, passed a tank commander course, and stood out in his battalion as an outstanding commander and as a loyal friend and devoted to his subordinates. “The entire Galilee is a red carpet of anemones and the tanks trample them,” Ronen told his mother. A brilliant mind, the soul of an artist and a loyal evil joined together in the tall, handsome young man, who played down his talents, but they were forced to do so. When the Peace for Galilee war broke out, Ronen was with the force that attacked the enemy’s arrays in the western sector. He advanced with his unit in the fighting path, to the outskirts of Tire. On the 17th of Sivan 5768 (June 8, 1982) in the break-in to Tire, Ronen was caught in the ambush of the enemy. The tank that commanded him was hit, and three of the crew members were killed. Among them was Shmuel-Ronen. He was 21 years old. In his letter of condolences to his parents and to the high school where Ronen studied, he said: “… I had a great privilege to teach him the science of science, and I learned from him the teachings of life. He was one of the best students in the world, and he was one of the best students in the world, a wonderful trainee who was a model for all the students, whose excellence and tenderness raise his wonderful image before my tearful eyes. After his fall, Ronen was promoted to the rank of sergeant, and his commander wrote in a letter to his family: “Staff Sergeant Shmuel was killed on the first day of the war, and his tank burst forth and he was caught in an ambush by the enemy.” Shmuel symbolized the perfect embodiment of an excellent commander.
