Shesh, Jonah (Vinca)


Son of Yaffe and Yehuda Shesh, was born on August 25, 1921 in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. On November 11, 1935, he immigrated to Israel and settled in Haifa. At an early age he joined the Haganah and took part in all Haganah operations and in particular was involved in the installation of hideouts and hide-and-seek weapons. When the war ended, he moved to Jerusalem and opened a workshop for soldering. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, on May 23, 1948, while he was in a position in the Old City, when he raised his rifle to return fire to the enemy’s whip, and was immediately hit with a bullet and was killed. His name was engraved on the monument erected in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in memory of those who perished in the Jewish Quarter and the memory of fighters who fell in battle for Jerusalem. He was buried on the Mount of Olives.
