Shelly, Jeremiah (“Yirmi”)

Son of Asher and Shoshana (Nara). He was born on July 20, 1957, in Ramle. He studied at the Neveh Shalom elementary school and continued his studies at the Amal Aleph high school in Ramle, where he studied electricity and systems control. Yirmi was a good disciplined student. He excelled in the electronics profession and in his free time built electronic accessories and stereo systems. He joined the Civil Guard, to the delight of his parents and family. In the course of time, he took a course in training youth for positions in the Civil Guard, which was held at the Gadna base in Sde Boker, and he was very optimistic about his character, and he loved life and did not complain or scowl. He was not interested in planning the future, but enjoyed every moment of his life and did not think about the future.Yermi was drafted into the IDF in September 1975 and was put into the air force. After basic training and after completing an aircraft electrician course, he was assigned to the IAF as an aircraft electrician. Yirmi did not like his role in the air force and wanted to serve in a combat field unit. After lengthy efforts he managed to get rid of his unit and volunteered for the paratroopers. With his new job, Yirmi changed beyond recognition. He advanced quickly in the Paratroopers Brigade and was commended by his commanders and friends. He was known in his company as a soldier who helps everyone. A courageous soldier despised fear and willing to devote his homeland. Yirmi went on a parachuting course and finished with great success. Even when he was injured in his leg and sent home for a vacation, he refused to stay at home and returned to the unit before he recovered. He did not complain and did everything he had to do with love. On the 10th of Iyar 5737 (May 10, 1977), Yirmi was killed while carrying out his mission in a helicopter crash in the Jordan Valley. In this disaster, 54 soldiers were killed. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Ramle. Survived by his parents, six brothers and sisters. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, the unit commander wrote: “You belong to the magnificent paratrooper family, which sacrificed many sacrifices on the altar of state security, and I hope that thanks to your son and brothers, the paratroopers will not know another war. , In order to fortify the security of the people for us and for the people of Israel. ” Yirmi’s parents donated a Torah scroll to his synagogue in Ramle.
