Sheffer, Avi,
Son of Ivonne and Meir was born on Simchat Torah on the 2nd of Tishrei 5721 (October 2, 1961) in Petah Tikva. Avi was drafted into the IDF in mid-October 1979. Due to his personal data, he was assigned to a pilot course in the IAF, but a few months later, when he retired, he volunteered for the Armored Corps and successfully completed a tank commander course and a tank- And an excellent NCO and was recommended by his commanders – who defined him as a “professional” – to go to the officers’ course. My father was among the first of the tank commanders to receive the “Merkava” tank. He was an optimist by nature, and he was not at all worried. “I’m like a cat,” he used to say. “Where they throw me away, I’ll always fall on my feet.” Even during his service, Avi did not abandon his hobby – the trip in Israel. He knew the rocks of Wadi Kelt and the cliffs of the Judean Desert, as if he knew the things on his desk. On the 7th of Sivan 5768 (7.6.1982), Avi’s first sergeant fell in battle in Lebanon during the Peace for Galilee War and was put to rest at the military cemetery in Petah Tikva. He left behind his parents, brother and sister. In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “My father was a good TC man who was improving, because he was always in the situation and willing to learn more and more. As the DCL was responsible and dedicated to its soldiers and thus also died – in defending the life of the complainant. “
