Shechtman, Shimon
Shimon, son of Sarah and Ze’ev Shechtman, was born in Petah Tikva in 1922. During the Second World War he served in the British Army, the Air Force, and the Navy. When he was discharged from the army he worked as a driver with the potash company. He remained loyal to the Hagana and was very active in the Palmach, and during the War of Independence he participated in the battles to secure the roads in the south and the road to Jerusalem. He fell in battle on the 25th of Nissan 5708 (May 4, 1948) in the Russian monastery near the village by a 3-inch mortar shell in the building. He was transferred to the military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem with the rest of the victims of the Gush.
