Schechter, Gershon


Gershon, son of Miriam and Jacob, was born on 2.5.1954 in Romania, immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1960. And attended the Joseph Trumpeldor Elementary School and the Nahariya High School. Gershon emigrated from Romania with all his family at the age of six and began his life in Israel in Moshav Avivim on the Lebanese border. Even before he had mastered the Hebrew language, he was already very talented and was the best student in the class. After the family moved to Nahariya, Gershon graduated from elementary school and high school and excelled mainly in the proper proffesions, which had excellent grades. Gershon was a sociable boy, interested in sports and very popular with his friends. By nature, he had a sense of humor, joyous and cheerful, and was always at the center of his social activities, at parties and trips with friends around the country. He was very attached to his parents and his family, respected and admired by his father and mother, and the house was a source of pride and family fraternity. In his home, he learned about unconditional love, respect for the man, and appreciation for manual labor. He was touched by the fact that his parents were working hard to make a living, so he took advantage of every hour of leisure and every holiday to work in all sorts of jobs and to help parents carry the burden of making a living.
Gershon enlisted in the IDF in early August 1972 and was assigned to the Armored Corps, where he served as a weapons instructor, although he preferred to remain in the unit Gershon was an excellent instructor and served as an example for his students: “Gershon was one of the best instructors and soldiers who served under my command,” wrote one of his commanders at the Armored Corps School, in which Gershon made many friends who praised him for his honesty and devotion to his friends. His service continued to maintain a strong connection with the home and During the Yom Kippur War, Gershon fought heroically as a rifleman in a tank company that was forced to stop the Syrian armored columns, which broke through the IDF’s defense line north of Quneitra in the Golan Heights. On October 9, 1973, he was wounded and killed during an armored battle against the Syrians on the eastern slopes of Mount Hermonit. He was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Nahariya. Survived by his parents and sister. After his fall, he was promoted to sergeant.
