Sal, Hanan (Chuna)

Sal, Hanan (Chuna)

Son of Leah and Meir, was born in 1919 in Warsaw, the capital of Poland. When the Nazis entered Poland he managed to escape to Russian territory, but when he tried to cross the Russian border back, he was caught and sent to Siberia. From there he joined the Red Army and fought against the Germans until victory. Hanan moved to Italy and served there as a sailor, moved to Cyprus and from there immigrated to Israel in early 1948 to participate in the War of Independence. From the day he joined the army, he worked as a sabotage officer in the engineering corps and eventually was appointed sergeant of the sabotage department. He took part in many operations in the Galilee, on the front lines of the front, and excelled in all of them. His attitude toward friends was straight and simple, and he had a hard task to impose on himself. Hanan was strong and energetic, and a smile always hung over his face. He kept his secret. On December 12, 1948, he was seriously injured near Malkiya when he encountered a mine-related obstacle: “I am glad that I fell victim to live with them.” At night he died of his wounds. He was buried in the military cemetery in Haifa.
