During his studies Eli was part of a team that investigated the identification of phytoplasm in vitro at the Faculty of Agriculture in Rehovot. After graduating from reserve duty in May 1998, Eli enlisted in the IDF and was assigned to serve in the Technology and Logistics Division of the Maintenance Corps as a Kalvant at the fuel laboratory at the Tel Hashomer base, where he was highly regarded by his commanders.
