Omri, Nechmad (‘Ami’)

Omri, Nechmad (‘Ami’)

Son of Aziz and Sarah. Born in 1951 in the city of Shiraz in Persia. When he was one year old, his family immigrated to Israel and built a laborious farm in the moshav HaOvdim Hodaya on the shore of Ashkelon. Nearby, in Mishan, there was a regional school where Ami studied eight years of elementary school. The parents did as much as they could, so that the children – six in number – would acquire a high school education, even if only partially. Ami was sent to the Ort vocational high school in Ashkelon, where he studied for three years in a mechanical-mechanical program. Ami had built a fairly wealthy social life in his moshav and in Ashkelon, and he had many friends who appreciated the qualities of the energetic, alert and kind-hearted boy, but he spared no effort In order to help his sick father maintain the farm, which encompassed some 30 dunams of land and about 35 cattle, and was recruited into compulsory service at the beginning of May 1969. He was proud to be part of the Armored Corps. At the end of 1970 he was awarded the rank of corporal. In the spring of 1971 he completed his service. After various attempts to integrate into civilian life in technical subjects he was accepted as a driver in the Egged Cooperative, a job that satisfied his needs. He continued to live with his family in Moshav Hodaya. I was assigned to the reserve corps for the reserve service. Here he served as a driver in his unit. During one of the reserve service periods, his fate was cruel and he fell during service on Tu B’Shvat (27.1.1975). Was brought to eternal rest in the military section of the Ashkelon cemetery. Survived by his parents, two sisters and three brothers. (One of them, Ben Zion, also fell two years later in the service of the homeland).
