Mintz, Zohar
The eldest son of Dorit and Chaim, the brother of Roni. He was born in Kiryat Haim on October 10, 1975. Zohar studied at the Neurim Elementary School in Kiryat Bialik and at the Ort Bialik High School where he successfully completed his studies in mechanics and machinery, At the beginning of April 1994, Zohar enlisted in the IDF and fulfilled his dream of volunteering for the “Shayetet” in which he served for ten months. He was later among the first to volunteer to re-establish the “Egoz” reconnaissance unit of the Golani Brigade. Zohar was a handsome, strong man, with great physical fitness and excellent technical sense, consistent in his actions and fully aware of the way he went. Zohar was described by his commanders as an excellent fighter, who performed his duties diligently and devotedly, demonstrated resourcefulness in all his actions and was admired and accepted by his commanders and friends alike. On Thursday, 6 Tishrei 5757 (19.9.1996), Zohar fell in combat as a sharp fighter in an offensive operation during an encounter with a terrorist cell in the area of the Sojod outpost in the northern sector of the security zone in southern Lebanon. Zohar was laid to rest in the military section of the Tzur Shalom cemetery in Kiryat Bialik, when he was twenty-one years old when he fell. Survived by his parents and sister. In a letter of consolation to the family, the unit commander wrote: “Zohar was always a soldier and an exemplary friend, always the first to every mission, doing it in the best possible way, while investing in thought and self-sacrifice.” Zohar was highly motivated and never complained. The ‘Egoz’ unit, its commanders and fighters, parted prematurely from a soldier, a fighter, a friend who contributed to his comrades and shared with him the values he had brought with him from his parents’ home.
