Metzger, Asher (Sherry)


Asher (Sherry), son of Esther and Pinchas, was born on March 2, 1948, in Choinow, Poland, He spent his first year of studies in his hometown, then studied at the Tachkemoni elementary school and continued his studies at the religious high school in Tel Aviv. He was a good and disciplined student, and although at first the Hebrew language was not practiced by him, he did well in his studies and his teachers praised him for his diligence. His friends said that in elementary school he excelled in craftsmanship in wood and in high school he succeeded in drawing. He did not want to burden his parents and during his vacations he worked to make it easier for them in the household, and thus he financed his studies. He was a literature lover and would read a lot, he loved classical music and sports. He had a large collection of stamps. Asher was a strong character, very stubborn and did not flinch from any difficulty in any of the problems he encountered. Was friendly and easy to make friends with. With his sense of humor and his smile, he was able to bring many friends close to him, and they often stayed at his home. He exuded joy, smiled at others, and always helped anyone who turned to him, even if it was uncomfortable. He was kind and broad. A loyal son of his family and a devoted husband to his wife, Sarah. Was drafted into the IDF in the middle of February 1966. After completing basic training, he was trained in a medium-tank tank course, and was commanded by Major Shamai Kaplan, who served in the IDF during the Six-Day War. Samua and Karameh. After he was released from the regular service, Asher invested all his energy in his work, saw a blessing in his labor and progressed rapidly in rank and position. He was the manager of the technical department at the Barih company in Petach Tikvah and later worked for the Alim company for research and development in Holon. Wherever he worked he was highly regarded and praised by his colleagues and superiors, for his intelligence, for his precision and for his responsibility. During the Yom Kippur War, Asher took part in the battles against the Syrians in the Golan Heights. In the battle that took place on the 13th of Tishrei 5734 (October 9, 1973), his tank was hit by the anti-tank gunman at Tel-Al-Tala at the time of the explosion at the Hosheniya compound, Asher was killed on the spot. A father, a mother, a sister, and a brother, he was promoted to the rank of First Sergeant, and wrote to the bereaved family: “He served as a model for his friends and subordinates.
