Markowitz, Ze’ev
Son of Bracha and Abraham, was born on the 27th of Kislev (December 10, 1928) in the Slovenian part of the city of Avala, In 1936 he immigrated to Israel with his family, who settled in Tel Aviv. Ze’ev studied at the Tachkemoni School and was known as a mischievous boy with a sharp intellect and a good athlete. At the age of 10, he joined Betar, but his parents demanded that he move to a more moderate movement, after which he agreed to their proposal to go to agricultural training in the kibbutz. In 1946 he returned to the city, studied frameworks and worked there, and as a Beitar trainee he was accepted into the Irgun underground and engaged in organization and propaganda, and Ze’ev was supposed to be sent to graduate school in England. His demand to move to the Irgun’s combat unit was supported by his instructors, but his commander decided to keep him in the affairs of the Irgun And propaganda. His thirst for action did not allow him to accept this role, and with the help of his former friends from training Deganya, who continued his friendly relations with him, he was accepted into the Palmach in early 1947. Ze’ev served in Givat Hashlosha, Ramat Rachel and Beit Ha’arava, In different battalions of the Palmach. He participated in escorting caravans on the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem line, the Old City and Gush Etzion (also in the Nabi-Daniel convoy, which suffered heavy casualties), in battles for the Castel and more. He recently took a wireless course and was transferred to the newly formed 7th Brigade. He participated in Operation son of-Nun Bet, the second attack on the Latrun Legion in order to break through the road to Jerusalem. There was a force that broke into the police yard and fell when a shell hit his car on May 30, 1948. On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
