Manor (miler),Yochanan


Yochanan, son of Gerda and Rudolf z “l, was born on December 13, 1941, in Leipzig, Germany, after his father’s death, and his mother immigrated to Israel in 1948. They lived in Ramat Hasharon, In early 1950, he moved to Kibbutz Givat Haim Meuhad, where he graduated from elementary school and high school, and was drafted into the IDF in early August 1961 and assigned to the infantry. After completing basic training, he completed a parachuting course and then completed a course for class commanders. During his regular service, he underwent an officer’s course and became an officer in the Paratroopers Brigade. During this period he married Raya, his girlfriend in the kibbutz, and with whom he established a family. At the end of his regular service, Yohanan returned to the kibbutz and completed his studies at the Gat factory, where he worked before he enlisted in the army. In the framework of his position, he studied Mechanical Engineering at the Ruppin Midrasha and, after completing his studies, was certified as a mechanical engineer. He returned to the factory and was responsible for mechanical equipment and maintenance. He devoted many hours to his job and worked tirelessly. At any hour of the day and night he might feel the factory, to solve problems that arose in his absence. As part of his military service, he was called for periods of reserve service and participated in various training and training courses. When the Six-Day War broke out he was drafted with his unit and participated in the battles for the liberation of Jerusalem. During the battles he and his soldiers burst into Ammunition Hill and fought in the cruel, bloody battle. After the battle, a handful of fighters survived, including Yochanan, who was wounded. He returned to the farm and six months later his eldest son was born and he called his name Dror, according to the sentence engraved on the Paratroopers Medal “and your walls were called Dror”. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, he was drafted and sent to the southern front. On the 18th of Tishrei, 5740 (18.10.1973), he went with his unit to rescue a tank force that was caught in a battle in the Abu Sultan compound. When he arrived at the scene, his vehicle was hit directly and Captain Yohanan was killed on the spot. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Kibbutz Givat Haim Meuhad. He left behind a wife, four children (Dror, Smadar, Zamir and Doron), mother and brother.
