Lowenstein, Ludwig

He was born on August 30, 1909 in Germany, the only son of his parents. In 1933 he joined Hehalutz, went to the hachshara and spent a year and a half there. In 1935 he immigrated to Eretz Israel and joined the “Ha-Kovesh” group. Despite his strong desire to integrate into social life, he could not overcome his tendency to be isolated in his solitude. Among his friends, he was known for his honesty and fairness, and excelled in the agricultural work that was close to his heart. He spent his free time in the reading room, learning Hebrew and listening to the radio on a regular basis. On 7 Av, August 4, 1938, a truck carrying seven of his friends on their way from work to the kibbutz boarded a mine. All eight were killed. Ludwig left a mother. His kibbutz friends published a pamphlet in memory of the eight, whose name was also immortalized in the book “Days of Ramah”.
