Levin, Yoseph (Fritz, Joe)

Yoseph (Fritz, Joe), son of Orna and Martin Levin, was born on February 7, 1921, in the city of Nuremberg, Germany. Yoseph immigrated to Israel in 1938 and and influenced his many friends to immigrate. Yoseph went to college in England, traveled to Canada and returned to Israel in 1945. His poor vision made it difficult for him to join the army. When the War of Independence broke out, he took a three-month course in Magen David Adom, which trained him as a combat medic. From time to time he heard about the fall of his comrades, and he longed to go to the front and was very disappointed when his departure for Gush Etzion in March was postponed. One Saturday he left in a convoy to Gush Etzion where he remained until his last day. In the fall of Kfar Etzion, Yoseph fell too, on the 4th of Iyar, May 13, 1948, and on the 25th of Cheshvon, November 17, 1949 he was transferred to the military cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem with the fallen of the Gush.
