Levi Yosef
Was born on April 23, 1928, in the Old City of Jerusalem, where he left the Jewish quarter in the Old City, leaving behind all her possessions. He began studying at the “Doresh Zion” elementary school, but due to his family’s financial situation, he began studying printing mechanics and worked as a mechanic in the Jerusalem printing press, while continuing his studies. This combination cost him hard and hard, but he did not give up. He completed his studies at the elementary school with an excellent diploma. In 1944 – at the age of 16 – he entered active service in the Hagana. Immediately after the United Nations General Assembly decided on 29 November 1947 to divide the country into two states, he took part in the battles of Makor Haim, Talpiot, Kiryat Anavim, Ma’aleh Hahamisha, Sheikh Jarrah, Bethlehem and the Old City. After leaving the Old City, he joined the Palmach’s Palmach Regiment and was among the pioneers of besieged Jerusalem. When he accompanied caravans to Hartuv, he was injured, dressed and moved to Neve Ilan. From this base he took part in operations on Mount Castel and escorted convoys to Mount Scopus. He was endowed with persistence, with willpower and faith, that he loved and cherished the values of Israel and was loyal to Jerusalem, his hometown. On the night of June 8-9, 1948, he went with his battalion to the “Yoram” operation – the third attack on Latrun. Because of a mistake in navigating, the battalion was on the 14th deck, instead of the thirteenth position as planned. The fighters attacked the outpost and succeeded in capturing part of it, and during the fierce battle many of them were injured. The enemy’s resistance was fierce, and due to the casualties, there was no power to complete the conquest of the outpost and an order was given to withdraw. In this battle he fell on the 2nd of Sivan 5708 (June 9, 1948.) On the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (17.11.1949), he was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
