Levi, Ernest

Ernest Levi, son of Olga and Oscar, was born on July 18, 1912 in Vienna, Austria. In the spring of 1938, when Vienna celebrated the entry of the Nazi army into Austria, Ernest fled from his city and came to Israel. He worked as a mechanic at the Egged bus station in Haifa, studied Hebrew and immersed himself in the life of the country. In the War of Independence he participated in the defense of Haifa and its liberation, in the service of the city’s strongholds, in the battles of Nebi Yusha, Malkia and other places in the Galilee and as a mechanic in the Palmach unit. He fell to the Arabs on the 11th of Tammuz 5708 (July 18, 1948). A monument in his memory was erected in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. His burial place is unknown.
