Leiman (Leiman), Hans (Hanan)


Son of Elisabeth (Liza) and John, was born on the 5th of Kislev 5761 (16.11.1920) in Berlin, Germany, to an assimilated family. His mother was a Christian who converted to Judaism and his father was a former officer in the Imperial German Army. His father immigrated to Israel in 1940. As immigrants they were apprehended and placed with other “detainees in Atlit. Hanan joined the British army, first he served as a driver in a water transport unit and then reached the rank of Sergeant. In 1941 he married. In 1945 he was discharged from the army and began working for a taxi company. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he joined the ranks of the “Kiryati” Brigade and was accompanied convoys to besieged settlements. On the 29th of Shvat 5708 (February 9, 1948) as he headed a convoy on the bypass road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, he was hit by a cluster of bullets near the Arab village of Mughar. He was brought to eternal rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery. He left behind a wife and child.
