Leibovitz, Arieh-Tuvia (Leib)


Son of Malka and Yitzhak was born on 28.2.1921 in Ogla, Czechoslovakia, and immigrated to Israel in 1936. At the age of 16, he joined the Haganah and took part in guarding the orchards of Be’er Ya’akov. And served in the Galilee, in the moving guard and in the firefighters, was there first for anyone who needed help, and out of self-sacrifice, he offered help to nearby and distant communities. When he left the Galilee, he moved to Kiryat Nahum in the Zvulun Valley, married and had a daughter, worked in agriculture and was appointed regional commander in security affairs. During the Second World War he left his civilian life and enlisted in the British Army, where he joined the army and was assigned to the 7th Brigade, which fought in the vicinity of Latrun, before leading a squad of soldiers to a dangerous outpost. The overwhelming majority of them attacked, but Aryeh objected, refused to abandon the outpost to the enemy, and fought until the ammunition was depleted, then ordered his men to flee, calling for help, but it came later. The reinforcements were able to cause heavy losses to the enemy and to hold the outpost, but Aryeh could not be saved. Before his death, he managed to sabotage his machine gun so that he would not fall into the hands of the enemy, and so he died a hero’s death near Latrun on June 9, 1948. He was buried in the cemetery in Naan on May 18, 1950 ) Was laid to rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak Military Cemetery.
