Lanir Abraham

Avraham (Avi), son of Jacob and Malka, one of the pioneers of the 1930s, was born on 25.1.1940 in Herzliya. He attended various schools, because his father was forced, by virtue of his duties, to move frequently from one place to another. He began his studies at the Ahad Ha’am elementary school in Tel Aviv, continued at the elementary school near the Hebrew Gymnasium in Jerusalem and at the elementary school in Netanya and completed his studies at the elementary school in the Dan neighborhood in Tel Aviv. When he was fourteen, his father and family went on a mission to the United States, and Avi attended high school in Washington and graduated with honors. My father grew up in an atmosphere of love for Israel and recognition of the obligation to protect the people and the homeland. About ten months after Avi was born, his father joined the ranks of the British army, which fought the Nazis, so Avi grew up among fighters, and his father among them, who fought for the defense of the Jewish people and for the establishment of the State of Israel. In 1954, when he arrived in the United States, he quickly overcame the difficulties of the foreign language and managed to finish high school with honors, which earned him a special grade from The lively and energetic father was not satisfied with the challenge of studying and preaching All his free time for training activities in the Hebrew youth movement in Washington – the Habonim youth movement – took him first place in the leadership of the movement and was elected to head it at the age of 17. At the age of seventeen the family returned to Israel, To study at the Air Force Technical School in Electronics. Avraham was drafted into the IDF in February 1959 and volunteered for the Israel Air Force, where he successfully completed his pilot studies and was accepted as an apprentice in the pilot’s course, and was assigned to an Air Force squadron in the role of fighter pilot in August 1962. He married Michal Barzilai, A member of the Israel Air Force, who lived in Jerusalem for about a year, and when Michal completed her studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Avi was appointed to a position at the base in the north of the country. When he took part in dropping one of the six “Mirage” surfers He then participated in a series of air battles, almost all of them in the skies of Syria, and knocked down a number of Syrian fighter planes, and after graduating successfully from the Technion in 1967, the family again moved to one of the air force bases where it was stationed. His daughter, Nurit, was sent for tours and training abroad, and in 1971 was appointed commander of the glorious 101st Squadron, which included Ezer Weizman, Moti Hod and son of Peled, and was known as one of the most senior pilots in the Israel Defense Forces. Despite the heavy workload in his new position, between training missions, he found time to organize the 25th anniversary of the squadron’s founding and received great praise for the huge ball and the exemplary organization. During the Yom Kippur War, he embarked on many battles and on October 12, 1973, he dropped a Syrian MiG-17. On the 17th of Tishrei 5734 (October 13, 1973), Avi was at the head of his aircraft to attack targets in Syrian territory, and his plane was hit by an air-to-surface missile. My father seems to be plunging across the Israeli border and falling into Syrian captivity, safe and sound. Eight months later his coffin was returned by the Syrians and he was brought to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He left behind an islandShah, son and daughter, parents and sister. My father won the “Medal of Valor” for the discovery of heroism in carrying out a combat role in a spirit of insanity. In describing the act, the chief of staff wrote: “On October 13, 1973, during a combat flight in the Golan Heights, the late Lt. Col. Avraham Lanir’s plane was hit and he was forced to abandon it in enemy territory. Lt. Col. Avraham Lanir z “l fell and reached the ground alive, was captured and taken prisoner. Lt. Col. Avraham Lanir z “l tortured to death by his interrogators and did not disclose any information. In his actions, Lt. Col. Avraham Lanir, of blessed memory, discovered courage, loyalty and supreme sacrifice. “
