Lahat-Gertzberg, Ira

Son of Moshe Sasha and Eva. He was born on August 16, 1945, in Rishon Letzion, where he grew up in his parents’ home, but because of his mother’s illness he was transferred to the children’s home at Kibbutz Ginegar, where he absorbed the atmosphere of the kibbutz life. He began his studies at the elementary school in Jerusalem, where he moved with his father for one year and then went on to study at the home of his father, – the elementary school in Yad Eliahu, when his father left at the end of 1955 as a professional emissary of the United Nations in Latin America The youth was accompanied by the boy and studied in elementary schools in the countries he had done with his father, and the main contribution of these years to his education was his mastery of the English language and the opening that opened to his eyes on international culture. He continued to study in Hadasim Children and Youth Village, where his artistic senses and skills developed, and a delegation of Israeli folk dance students set out to participate in an international folklore festival in Italy. He graduated from the Geula high school in Tel Aviv and was a talented student who achieved achievements without any effort. His main achievements are in English and mathematics. Ira joined the IDF in late October 1964, but since he passed the entrance exams to the Technion, he was rejected for military service and he was attached to the academic reserve, and his classmates talk about his analytical abilities, his most important point of view and his phenomenal memory. He was a member of the committee and secretary of the Association for Internal Affairs, and underwent many courses – mainly during vacations – including a course for officers and officers. One of Ira’s instructors in the officers ‘course writes: “… Ira was an apprentice in the department where I taught in the officers’ course – the academic reserve course in the summer of 1966. To my best memory Ira was the most outstanding and talented cadet I remember from this period. , The most pleasant and the most Yaffa – was the same look of laughter and smile so attractive and friendly and without detracting from the seriousness and maturity and the same charm of talent attracts him to him – the leadership of Ira … ” . At the outbreak of the Six-Day War called to reserve duty and fought as an officer on the southern front. The war and its horrors intensified Ira, accelerated his maturation and deepened his preoccupation with the problems of the Israeli people and society. In an article published by Ira in the “HaPoel Hatza’ir” newspaper on February 7, 1967, in which he was asked to exploit the knowledge and education of Israeli youth, immigration and absorption in Israel, he wrote: “The State of Israel is not blessed with many natural resources, Therefore, I am surprised that our greatest treasure is the ability to acquire and operate knowledge, and we do not take advantage of it as a means of developing many dimensions in the fields of economics and society. And thus help to smuggle it abroad and weaken the future of the state. The defense attorneys will come and say: “We are encouraging an elite with knowledge from abroad, who we call and call back to them – come with your masses, our gates open, we will welcome you willingly. But the gates are open, but the courtyard is closed and closed, when the person who comes to Israel arrives immediatelyHad the impression that the Israeli people had closed their hearts to the troubles of others and stopped worrying about him. We call upon the Jews of all the world to come to Israel. Well, the Jews of Russia will come, because it is bad for them and the circumstances pressure them to flee wherever possible. However, why should a Jew from the US, South America, or any other enlightened country immigrate to Israel? The modern immigrant demands more because he sacrifices more when he comes here, and the minimal things we can guarantee him must be a safe place of work and sufficient appreciation for the knowledge he has acquired in the Diaspora. Let us change all this, open our eyes and look ahead, and when we see the future we will begin to do something to correct the situation as long as we are not late! ” After the war, he returned to his studies and completed the Faculty of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management. Ira began his mandatory service in the IDF as a systems engineer in the personnel division of the General Staff, where he discovered his talents and “caught” the subject quickly and efficiently. In spite of his relatively old age, he successfully passed the tests and was accepted to the flight school, which he completed as a combat pilot, and participated in the IAF’s operations, and among his duties In the squadron, he also served as a systems officer, a position that enabled him to discover and fulfill His best analytical talent and his ability to initiate and plan improvements in the control of the complex systems of their aircraft and equipment and their efficient operation by the pilots, Ira was transferred to the flight school as a pilot, During the course of his studies, and as far as possible in the squadron, Ira engaged in sports and body and spirit development, along with soccer, tennis and table tennis, swimming and bridge, and was an excellent player in both chess and bridge and solved complex mathematical questions Published in the world and country newspapers. A month before they fell, he married a wife. On April 15, 1973, Captain Ira fell while serving as a pilot. He left a wife and a young sister-Lihi. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul. At the initiative of the father of Ira, a public committee was established to commemorate his memory, who decided to establish the Ira Foundation for the development and advancement of human engineering in Israel The subject of “Human Engineering” was chosen to commemorate his memory as it expresses the personality, analytical skills and actions of Ira on the one hand and serves the need Is essential for the Israeli agriculture and society, and the fruits of the Ira Foundation will be used, inter alia, to award prizes and grants to encourage research, theoretical and original work and achievements, as well as studies on human engineering. In the opening remarks of the first Ira symposium, the commander of the Air Force, Major General Peled, said: “Ira was one of the same group of rare people in the air force, who was both an engineer and an operator at the highest level I know. When Mr. Gertzberg came to see me for the first time, the truth is that I stopped for a moment and thought, Is this the right way to commemorate? I did not think for a long time and came to the conclusion that maybe this was the right way. For me as commanderThe Air Force and as a member of this institution have special significance for the chosen subject – human engineering. I would like the Air Force to take an active part in nurturing this idea. “Ira’s memoirs were published in a leaflet issued by the Geula High School in memory of his students and graduates who fell in Israel’s wars. “In” Science “and in other publications.
