Kaufmann, Eliezer

Born in 1920 in Poland, he received a Zionist education. In 1933, with his older sister from Israel, the 13-year-old promised to follow her and said: “All roads lead to the Land of Israel.” Meanwhile, World War II broke out and the Holocaust began. Eliezer managed to escape from Poland and with the stream of refugees arrived in Siberia. For over a year he worked in a kolkhoz. He enlisted in the Red Army, specialized as a terrorist, and rose to the rank of sergeant (sergeant). Was the only Jew in his battalion. When the war came to an end, he deserted from the Russian army and in the escape route reached Israel as an immigrant on the Latrun. For a certain time he was arrested at Atlit and upon his release he settled in work in Haifa, where his sister lived. During the War of Independence he was one of the first guards of the Haifa-Hadera train, served in the Carmeli Brigade, participated in the battles to liberate Haifa and its environs, and in battles in the Galilee he excelled with great courage and iron discipline. On Wednesday, 7 October 1948, Eliezer Miryot was killed on the road between Lubia and Nazareth. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa.
