Karudo, Yitzhak

Yitzhak, son of Kochava and Avraham Karudo, was born in Izmir, Turkey in 1930. In the early years of his youth, he orphaned from his father. Yitzhak made aliyah in 1942 by train through Syria. He worked on the kibbutz to support his mother who remained abroad. Later he moved to a settlement near Kfar Ata, where he stayed until his enlistment. Yitzhak joined the Palmach and was a member of the Haganah after the UN General Assembly Resolution. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, he joined the army and served in the Carmeli Brigade. Yitzhak participated in the conquest of Haifa, Acre and various villages (including Lubia, near Sejera) throughout the Eastern and Western Galilee. On the 3rd of Sivan 5708 (June 10, 1948), during an attack on Sejera, his commander was seriously wounded. He ordered Yitzhak to leave him in his place and escape, but Yitzhak refused and tried to save him. Yitzhak was hit by a cluster of bullets and died and was brought to rest in the military cemetery in Afula.
