Joyce Jacob

Son of Esther and David-Yehuda, was born on the night of Hanukkah, December 16, 1919, in the town of Frauenkirchen, Austria. He visited the school until he was bar mitzvah and at a young age was forced to abandon his studies and go to work, to help his family’s agriculture. Was a tailor’s apprentice, and at the same time found the way to the Mizrachi movement and became a Zionist. When Hitler’s Holocaust descended on Austrian Jewry, he was given the opportunity to immigrate to Finland, but he immigrated to Israel. He arrived at Netanya on 12.12.1938 and joined the religious kibbutz of Ramat Hashomron of Hapoel Ha-Mizrachi. During the Second World War he joined the British Army and was captured by the Germans in Greece and was held captive for five years. Upon his release, he returned to his work in Petah Tikva and lived on his stomach. He was a modest man, loving work and loved by all he knew. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he enlisted in the Alexandroni Brigade and participated in various night activities and battles. On July 15, 1948, in the evening, his company replaced another company from the brigade in the posts east of Kula and had not yet managed to prepare and dig in properly. On the morning of the following day the Legion forces attacked the outpost. Aided by artillery fire and armored vehicles, swept the department posts at the front post and forced the company to withdraw. In this battle he fell on the ninth day of Tammuz 5708 (July 16, 1948.) He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Netanya, leaving a wife and a one-year-old child.
