Janco, Shamai-Solomon


Shammai-Shlomo, son of Hinda and Abraham, was born on February 12, 1951, in Pietranimetz, Romania, and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1963. He studied at the “Meginim” elementary school in Kiryat Haim and continued his studies in high school He was a member of the “Hanoar Haoved” youth movement during most of his studies, and was active in the framework of the ” P. He was a sports fan, excelled and interested mainly in football. Shamai loved to help others and always offered his help to anyone who needed her. He was loyal to his parents and devoted to his family. After completing his studies at the “Amal” school, Shamai went to work and worked in several garages in the Haifa industrial zone. He always stood out for his diligence, perseverance and quality of work. Shammai was drafted into the IDF in mid-October 1970 and assigned to the Ordnance Corps. After basic training and after completing a course in automotive mechanics, he was appointed a gasoline car mechanic in an armored unit. Since he was assigned to the army in his profession, he signed an early commitment to permanent service for six months. When the Yom Kippur War broke out, Shammai-Shlomo was one of the strongholds in the Sinai, in the framework of a technical unit, which was sent there to repair a damaged half-track, and fought with his friends in the stronghold until it fell to the Egyptians. On October 8, 1973. Some of the soldiers of the stronghold were taken prisoner, and Shamai was first declared missing, and five months after his death, he was found dead in the Haifa cemetery and left behind a father, mother and sister. To the rank of First Sergeant In a letter of condolence to the bereaved family, his commander wrote: “Your son was an excellent professional, a decent and honest quiet.”
