Itzkovitz, Shraga (Feivel)
Son of Sheine-Yaffa and Yosef-Meir, was born on Rosh Chodesh Menahem-Av 5761 (August 5, 2121) in Kovno, Lithuania, and immigrated with his parents to Eretz Israel in 1925. He studied at the Tachkemoni School in Tel Aviv and later in the “Haskalah” Gymnasium. As a child, he was educated in a spirit of national and religious tradition and joined the Beitar youth movement, and Shraga aspired to be an agricultural laborer and to continue his studies at the agricultural school in Mikvah Israel, but due to the events of 1936 he could not leave his parents’ home. Shraga was forced to postpone the fulfillment of his dream and help his father in the distribution of ice in the “Lebanon” cooperative. During the Second World War he volunteered for the British Army and served there for four years. After he was released and returned to his parents’ home, he would woo the doors of the labor office and work at any hard work he might have. At work he helped the weak and old workers. Was willing to help all, repaying favors with his small money and after his death many loans were returned to his parents that he never mentioned. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he participated in guarding the borders of Tel Aviv and then conquering Jaffa. On July 8, 1948, he joined the Israel Defense Forces and served in the Givati Brigade. Did wholeheartedly work hard in excavations and fortifications. Was devoted to his friends, courageous in battles and even helped the wounded. On the night of the 16th of Tishrei 5709 (19.10.1948), during the operation “Yoav” for the breakthrough to the Negev in the battle for the outposts of Julikat, was wounded by a shell in his left hand, but continued to play his role until the end of the battle. Shraga was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Kfar Warburg.
