Grochowina, Gershon (Gershon)
Son of Deborah and Hanoch, was born on the 5th of Nisan 5703 in Sosnowiec, Poland. In his city, he finished elementary school and later worked as a prostitute. From his youth he was a member of Hashomer Hatzair and was trained in a kibbutz near Chelm. He was conscripted into regular service in the Polish army and during his vacations he came “home” to the kibbutz. In 1938 he immigrated to Israel and served for years as a guard in Netanya. In his service in the army and in Navarot he acquired knowledge and agility in the use of various weapons and excellent shooting skills, and he imparted this knowledge to his comrades in the Hagana. Gershon joined the founders of Kibbutz Yad Mordechai and was one of the best workers in the kibbutz. He was a cheerful man full of joy. Straightened his good spirits over his friends in Nutras and the agriculture and helped to dispel worries and bitterness. He had a special affection for himself and the children, and lately he had been granted his affection for his own child. In the winter of 1948 he took part in the defense of the place and its fortification and in the conquest of the nearby Arab village of Brayer and was prepared to go to conquests in distant places as long as the danger to the nest of his group and his family was not forthcoming. On May 19, 1948, in an Egyptian attack on the agriculture, a few moments after he warned his friend not to raise his head from the excavation, he himself was wounded in the throat and fell. He was laid to rest in the cemetery at Yad Mordechai.
