Gottlieb, Avshalom (“Avshai”)


Son of David and Sarah. Born on March 18, 1936 in Jerusalem, he completed his studies at the Hebrew Gymnasium in Rehavia, and was a member of the Masada Scouts in his hometown, during the War of Independence he was only twelve years old, but he did not refrain from participating as much as he could In various actions, such as the transfer of orders and notes from one position to another in besieged Jerusalem. He joined the IDF in August 1954. He took a commanding officer’s course and as a guide he knew how to be a commander and a member alike for all the details of his orders And in spite of the depression that he experienced as a result of the fall of one of his best friends, he told his mother that he was a member of the Kinneret family, “Yes, if I do, please do not cry at me.” During the last year of his service, he completed a symbol course and lived in the Negev Arava Two days before his release, on the eve of Friday, March 11, 1956, he went to the area of ​​Qalqilya, broke through the fortified enemy lines and fell after carrying out his mission with courage and heroism. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. In 1961 a synagogue was built in the Kiryat Hayovel neighborhood of Jerusalem, named after the tent of Avshalom. A charity fund was established adjacent to the synagogue. These two institutions were established by Avshalom’s father.
