Glockenberg, Arie (Leon)
Aryeh (Leon), son of Bronia and Tuvia, was born on October 10, 1953, in Wroclaw, Poland, and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1957.Arieh was drafted into the IDF in mid-July 1971 and assigned to the Signal Corps. After completing basic training and after completing a technical course and a course for a communications systems technician, he was sent to a divisional liaison unit and was later assigned to the armored school unit and awarded the rank of sergeant. His commanding officer wrote: “Arieh served in an armored unit and excelled in fulfilling his duties, and was a veteran soldier in the unit and contributed greatly to his personal experience, professional knowledge, and personality. Aryeh was connected to his family. When his father was hospitalized, Aryeh did not leave his bed for many days. He was always careful to write home and often to visit the house during his vacations and did all he could to prevent his family from worrying. In the Yom Kippur War, Aryeh took part in the battles of containment and incursion against the Egyptians on the Sinai front. He fought with his unit in the central sector of the Suez Canal and moved with it to the West Bank. In a battle that took place on the 19th of Tishrei 5734 (19.10.1973), he felt the help of a wounded and injured member of a Katyushas shelling on the bridge. He was transferred to the hospital and died on the same day. Aryeh was laid to rest in the Herzliya cemetery. Survived by his parents and brothers. After his fall, he was promoted to First Sergeant.
