Gardi, Chana

Chana, daughter of Rivka and Ze’ev Gardi, was born in 1927 in Jerusalem. She was a member of Hashomer Hatza’ir. In 1945, Chana was admitted to the nursing school in Jerusalem. She was very fond of children and often wanted to bring her mother a baby of a poor family. She served as a recruiter in the “Hadassah” Mount Scopus since the beginning of the War of Independence. At the end of December 1947 she came home for a few days’ vacation. Her mother tried to persuade her to stay and work in Tel Aviv, because on Mount Scopus the danger was greater, but she refused to “manage” in a comfortable and safe service and returned to Jerusalem. When she reached Jerusalem, she realized that the safe trip to Mount Scopus had ceased. In spite of warnings, she set out to return to her workplace and, passing through Sheikh Jarrah, was murdered by the Arabs on 20 Tevet, January 2, 1948. Chana was brought to rest in the Nahalat Yitzhak military cemetery.
