Freund, Shlomo (Gabriel)

Shlomo (Gabriel), son of Rachel and Moshe Freund, was born in 1927, in Breslau, Germany, and immigrated to Israel with his entire family in October 1933. When the War of Independence broke out, he enlisted in the Haganah, joining the religious unit and was transferred by plane to the besieged village of Kfar Etzion on 23 March 1949. Shlomo fell in the last battle in which Kfar Etzion fell, on 4 Iyar (May 13, 1948). One of his friends, who returned from captivity in Transjordan, said in a conversation with his mother: “Know that everyone who knew Shlomo loved him.” On the 17th of Cheshvan (17.11.1949), he was brought to eternal rest with the rest of the Bloc in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
