Elkana, Shaul (Shaulnik)


Son of Binyamin and Yaffa, was born on the 25th of Sivan, June 24, 1946, in Nahalal. He graduated from elementary and high school. He belonged to the Hanoar Haoved movement. He was modest and gentle with his friends. During his leisure time, he dealt mainly with work in the agriculture, sports and youth training in the moshav. He also wrote poetry and articles. In August 1965, he was drafted into the IDF, and served in the Shiron Brigade. He was asked if he was not afraid of what was expected of him. He said “If there is a need, it is better to sacrifice for the homeland!” During the Six-Day War, while commanding a tank division, during the battle that took place at the “Oakland” positions in Sinai, on the 26th of Iyar, June 5, 1967, the first day of the battles, he was hit by a mortar shell, that fell on the turret of the tank. He was buried in the Kiryat Shaul Military Cemetery, and later transferred to eternal rest in the cemetery in Nahalal. On the first anniversary of his death, the family published a book in his memory.
