Dessauer, Shlomo

Son of Sarah and Abraham was born on February 14, 1928, in Wloclawek, Poland, and immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1935. The family settled in Haifa. After graduating from a vocational school, Shlomo, who was a member of the “Mahanot Haolim” movement, went to Yagur for training. The settlement nucleus, in which he was a member, joined the Palmach, and with him went to a training center in Maoz Haim, where the social life of the nucleus began, and his commanders spoke of his desire to go to a commanders’ course. And that is what I do not want, “he claimed, while his parents’ economic situation worsened, and shortly before the UN General Assembly decided to partition the country, Shlomo returned home. But the days of his stay in his parents’ house did not last long. Once again called for service. “The time has come to take advantage of the information we have acquired, everything we prepared for the desired day, the day of the liberation of the homeland,” he told his parents. Shlomo participated in the battle for the defense of Mishmar Haemek and battles in the Upper Galilee in the ranks of the “Yiftach” Brigade and fell on the 6th of Iyar 5708 (May 15, 1948), while covering the retreat of his class in battle near the village of Malkiya. A number of buried bodies were found, one of which was identified as a body of Shlomo, and members of the Maoz Haim training team took him to rest in a mass grave at Kibbutz Maoz Haim in the Beit Shean Valley.
