Dayan, Zohar (Zorek)
Zohar (Zorek), son of Dvora and Shmuel Dayan, was born in 1926 in Nahalal. As a memory of bold attempts his face was covered with scars. Already at the age of 13, he joined the labor force. In his 16th year, he finished school in his village and together with his father became the main worker in the kibbutz (his older brother, Moshe, devoted himself entirely to the Haganah). During World War II he wanted to enlist in the British Army but only two years later, at age 18, received the consent of the family and joined the Jewish Brigade. His stations were: Zerifin, Genifa in Egypt, and later as a driver of the Hahayal in Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium. At the outbreak of the War of Independence he completed a course for division commanders and devoted himself to establishing a battalion in the Carmeli Brigade under son of Ami Pachter. On 5 Nisan, April 14, 1948, Zorek and a number of commanders rushed toward the enemy. He was hit by a bullet in his temple and killed. Three defenders fell in this battle. It was only four days later that the bodies were collected. Zohar was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Nahalal. He left a wife Miriam (Mimi) and a son, Uzi, who later became a major in the IDF.
