David, Shlomo
Shlomo, son of Pappe and Yosef David, was born in 1927 in Radautz, Romania. When he was three years old, he was orphaned from his father and during World War II he was deported with his family to Transnistria. In 1944 he immigrated to Israel with his sister. His mother remained in exile. In Israel, he joined the “Histadrut”. Everyone knew him as a good and devoted friend. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he joined the Hagana, served in the Oded Brigade and participated in the battles of the Galilee, the conquest of Safed, and the battles of Malkia and Mishmar HaYarden. His friend tells of the great battle in Malkia, which lasted for many hours, as hunger began to harass the fighters who were scattered over a large area. As the enemy shells fell and the planes attacked overhead, Shlomo ran from position to position and brought food and cigarettes to the fighters. During Operation Brosh for the destruction of the Syrian bridgehead in the Mishmar Hayarden area, he was wounded in the leg and he himself bandaged his wound. He threw two grenades at the enemy and was wounded by a cluster of bullets. He was buried in Tiberias on 3 Tamuz, 10.7.1948, and on June 1, 1950 was transferred to the military cemetery in Haifa.
