Cohen, Mordechai (Motke)

Son of Miriam and Shimon. He was born in 1929 in Tiberias to parents of a religiously observant family, and his father was a shoemaker who worked day and night to support his extended family. Mordechai worked in agriculture and devoted himself to caring for birds and cattle, and at the same time decided to build his life on the kibbutz. He was a member of the Hanoar Haoved youth movement and was admitted to the youth group Alonim, where he worked there for a year, where he demonstrated strong will, vigor and responsibility, and all admired him as an industrious worker and as a friend. He was a “tanned, black-haired, broad-shouldered, straight-haired boy. Loved the laughter.” After spending two years in Alonim, he moved to Kibbutz Ein Harod, where he worked in the cowshed and during his visits to his family home, he proudly told about his life on the kibbutz. On 14 Iyar, 4.5.1947, three members of Alonim who worked for Ein Harod were killed: Mordechai (Johnny) Auerbach, Shmuel Kaufman and Mordechai Cohen. He left four sisters and three brothers.
