Cohen, Maimon

Cohen, Maimon

Son of Zohara and Joseph, was born in the city of Oujda in Morocco on 24 January 1934. He began to study in the “cheder” and after the bar mitzvah he entered high school and completed his studies successfully. Maimon went to work, although he wanted to continue his studies, and he began to work as a tailor, and in 5717 Maimon went with his family to Israel and the family decided to live in Jerusalem. At first he worked at odd jobs and was finally hired by Solel Boneh. He married his wife Carmela before he enlisted in the IDF, and was recruited in 1958 but did not have time to serve for long periods of time. More than a year after the liberation, Maimon was unable to go to work. When he was better, he returned to work at Solel Boneh. He worked without hours. He would leave his home early in the morning and return late at night, all to improve his economic situation and his family’s expanding situation. He also studied technical drafting and knew how to read plans and building drawings. He was therefore promoted to his place of work and his salary improved. Maimon remained loyal to his workplace at Solel Boneh and did not develop to leave despite financial temptations. In 1976, when his health stabilized and the pain almost ceased, Maimon volunteered to serve in the Haganah, and Maimon was a modest, quiet and tolerant man, and he cared for his family, so that he would not miss anything, and his wife and children brought him back. He loved to paint and read, especially history books, and on May 9, 1980, Maimon fell during his service and was put to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. He left a wife, five daughters and a son, a mother and eleven brothers and sisters. To commemorate his memory, his family entered a Torah scroll in his name for a synagogue in the Mekor Hayim neighborhood of Jerusalem.
