Caro, Yitzhak (Itzik)
Son of Roza and Yosef, he was born on June 24, 1962, in Ashkelon. Yitzhak was the eldest son of his family. His father, a veteran police officer in his city, educated his son to love the land and to be aware of national security. Yitzhak attended elementary and junior high school at Beit Yehezkel. He then completed four years of study at the ORT vocational school in Ashkelon, specializing in mechanics. In October 1980, Yitzhak enlisted in the IDF and served in the infantry unit, where he was trained to serve in a combat unit, where he underwent training in the Golani Brigade, and with the force that broke into Lebanon and advanced with his unit to the outskirts of Beirut In one of the battles, Yitzhak was cut off from his unit, and for four days he was considered to be missing. On 16 Tamuz, 6 July 1982, when he was in an armored personnel carrier near the Beirut airport, he fell in battle. He was 20 years old when he fell, and Yitzhak was killed two weeks after his family celebrated his 20th birthday. Yitzhak was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Ashkelon. He left behind his parents, brother and sister. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon wrote in a letter of condolence to his family: “Corporal Yitzhak Caro gave his life to his homeland, he served in the infantry, stood out with a strong will and always tried to get what he thought was right.” The commander of his unit wrote to his family: “Yitzhak was a very sensitive guy, stood out in his strong will, was kind and maintained close ties with his friends.”
