Birnbaum, Matityahu (“Matti”)
Son of Meir and Batya. He was born in Berlin, Germany on June 18, 1947. He was born in Poland and the mother (born in Russia) met during the Second World War, and after the war, when they were in a refugee camp, Matityahu was born. When his parents immigrated to Israel in 1948 and settled in Tel Hanan, near Haifa, he joined the Yifat group in the Jezreel Valley in 1955 and then continued to live there as a friend, and soon became absorbed in his class and discovered various talents and sharp intellect. There, he studied sports and learned to play the guitar, which he always had with his evenings of entertainment Were fed up with his rich inner world, who did not emphasize him in society, but when he was forced to turn them into real deeds, his friends were surprised by his achievements.In August 1965 he was drafted into the IDF and volunteered for the air force. He received the pilot’s wings in March 1967. His coolness, calm and talents certainly helped. He served as a combat pilot and as such fell during his regular service when the Six-Day War broke out. On the first day of the battles, on the 26th of Iyar 5727 (June 6, 1967), this was the case, and he flew over the enemy force in El Arish. He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Yifat. After they fell they were promoted to lieutenant. A booklet about him and two of his friends was published by the Ifat group. In the collection “Bimkom” in memory of the fallen soldiers of the European Union who fell in the battle that the Union of the Kibbutzim and Kibbutzim took out, several pages were dedicated to his memory and his government.
